After the reception, we'll head home for a little nap and then fly out of Oakland for the City of Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. We haven't finalized our itinerary and will probably leave it pretty flexible. We have some basic idea of what we will do and where we will stay, but could change our minds at any moment. June is the slow season, so lodging is easy to find without reservations.
We will fly into Merida early Saturday afternoon and rent a car. After flying all night, we'll decide wether to spend a night in Merida or drive a couple of hours to Celestun, on the Gulf of Mexico. Celestun is a biosphere reserve and a nesting place of pink flamingos. We will take a boat tour to see the flamingos and the surrounding area. Celestun is also a fishing village and has a reputation for having excellent seafood restaurants. We plan on sampling as much ceviche as we can along with whatever looks or smells good. We'll probably linger longest at a beach front restaurant, sipping Tecate or Margaritas.
After a couple of days in Celestun, we'll hit the jungle roads to explore the Mayan ruins. Chichen Itza and Uxmal are two of the largest and most famous sites, but there are dozens of sites dotting the area. We may spend a night or two at the Fly Catcher Inn. We'll probably also spend a night or two in the city of Valladolid, where we may stay at Hotel Meson del Marques. It will be hot, so we'll want to stop for a swim in at least one cenote. (we've been to Dzitnup Cenote that is in the website and the photo does not do it justice). Maybe we'll even do some cave diving.
We will make our way to the Caribbean coast where we will slow down a bit. We'll spend some time just sitting on the beach and some time scuba diving. We are thinking of staying at the Mayan Beach Garden, but our travels may instead take us to Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or the island of Cozumel.
We aren't sure where we'll fit it in, but We also hope to get to Isla Holbox where we can snorkel with whale sharks. Isla Holbox also has a flamingo reserve, so we may go there and cut out Celestun.
It all depends on what we feel like doing. We'll go wherever we decide from day to day. Who knows where we'll end up? Well, actually, I suppose we do. We'll end up in Cancun were we'll get a flight home, but not spend a minute more than necessary.
